The Fog of Time: Aunt Vina

This is the story of Aunt Vina (pronounced Viney) the sister of my great grandmother Nancy Minerva (Norris) Gamblin. The best way to read it is maybe to save it your own computer and print it off. I thought of typing it out on here, but then I came to my senses and scanned it in!
It was written by Doris Compton, my Dad's cousin, she gave it to me 30 years ago. I love the story it does show what life was like during the Civil War.

And so they came to Canada

Ancestor

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiselled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
Your died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the one you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved.
